7 Major Makeup Mistakes You Should Avoid

Being a makeup pro isn’t tough these days. With the abundance of makeup tutorials on Youtube by famous vloggers such as Noe Mae Villagonzalo, Jen Im and Judy Travis. Watch a couple of these videos and you’ll quickly learn the basics of applying concealer, how to shape your brows and what type of foundation you should not be shopping for.

As you level up in your beauty skills, it’s important to keep the basics in check. Think of them as sacred commandments of cosmetics – never skip a step. These practices exist for a reason, and if neglected, they might ruin your look – or even worse, your skin!

Are you guilty of these common makeup mistakes?

1. Not cleaning your brushes

Oh dear, for the love of all things beautiful, please make it a point to clean your makeup brushes!

Dirty brushes are a hotbed for dust and bacteria and we’re not exaggerating when we say that some of them can pose health risks. Makeup brushes are not difficult to wash: just use some mild shampoo to wash them after each use and store them in a cool and dry place.

2. Using one shade of concealer for your whole face

We understand that branded concealers are pricey, but if you want to achieve the best results, you should have at least two shades of concealer. One for dark circles, and one for acne marks.

Your eye area is thinner than other parts of your face, so thinner areas require concealers of a lighter shade. If you use the same shade for every part, you might end up making the things you want to conceal even more obvious.

3. Using certain products for more than a year

Bear in mind that your cosmetics have an expiration date! If your gel eyeliner is more than three months old, you should really throw it away. That goes for your favorite mascara as well, honey.

While certain products may lose their effectiveness after their expiration dates, some can even harm your skin.

4. Curling your lashes after applying mascara

Curl your lashes first, then apply your mascara. Using a curler on mascara-coated lashes will only rip your lashes off. Ouch!

Furthermore, the sticky mascara coat will ‘glue’ your lashes to the curler, making it really tough to achieve the perfect curl.

5. Using black eyeliner for your bottom eye line

If you’re going for a goth look, by all means – the darker the bottom eye liner, the better.

But this isn’t a great look for an au natural, everyday makeup routine as it will only make your eyes appear smaller. It also makes the lines around your eyes more obvious. If you need to line your bottom eye line, use dark brown instead.

6. Not using toner and moisturizer

If cosmetics make you look good then healthy skin makes you look even better!

Makeup can only do so much to conceal your marks and scars, whereas a proper skincare routine can eliminate and prevent these from even surfacing. So don’t skip the toning and moisturizing of your skin. Those steps are crucial after washing your face.

7. Neglecting your neck

If you don’t blend your foundation of BB cream to your neck, you’ll end up looking like you have two different skin tones. Apply foundation to your neck to match the color of your face. Don’t forget to cleanse, tone and moisturize your neck as well to avoid wrinkly skin as you age.
