Ladies – we know that DIY renovation seems like a daunting task that is not for the faint at heart. But we don’t all have a Mr. Big around to tell us the difference between a Philips head and an Allen wrench, so we bring you the next best thing, a DIY tools must have list to bring out the MacGyver in you!
Number one on our list is the ever-reliable tape measure. Any project you take on will require that you have bought items that fit in the space. Always measure out the space before you buy drawers, shelves or curtains you want to install. There’s nothing worse than finding the perfect curtain only to realize the material you bought is 3 meters too short to cover the length of the windows. It’s also a good idea to measure out the shelve or rod you’re looking to buy just to make sure that there isn’t any discrepancy between the measurement stated on the product and the actual size of the product itself. Meticulousness is key!
Almost all DIY projects will require the use of screwdrivers. To avoid resorting to going through all the keys in the house to try to screw in nails – we suggest you get a screwdriver set instead. All roads may lead to Rome but not all screwdrivers will get the job done, there are many kinds of screws that require a specific screwdriver – it all depends on the pattern on the head of the screw.
The most commonly used in the region is the Philips screw driver although you should have an Allen key and Slot Head on hand too. A screwdriver set will carry these and in different sizes too! Remember the golden rule when using a screwdriver, righty-tighty and lefty-loosy. In layman’s terms, turn the screwdriver to right to tighten the screw and to the left to loosen the screw. Be careful not to over-tighten the screw though as this could result in damaging the head which will render it useless.
Cordless Power Drill
We have come a long way since the cavemen days and believe it or not you don’t need biceps and brute strength to screw and hammer screws and nails into walls. Ladies – we give you the cordless power drill (cue heavenly music). A power drill will let you drill into almost any surface with minimal effort, and we recommend the cordless power drill just so that you don’t have to worry about wires getting in the way and it also gives you the extra room to not be plugged in when while doing your drilling work. Believe us, this is a must and hey – it looks cool.
You’re wondering why we have yet to mention the all-important hammer aren’t you? Well, we have news for you – dump your hammers and get a nail gun instead. Not only is it safer as you don’t need to hold the nail while hammering with your other hand, it’s also much faster! You’ll get the job done in half the time with more accuracy too as the nail will pierce through the surface at the exact spot you point it at. So please – ditch the hammers, there’s a new tool in town.
