How To Pack Your Stuff For A Move

Moving to a new place is definitely an exciting time for everyone. Now you can browse catalogs and websites for decorating inspiration not just for the fun of it, but because this time, you actually have a reason to. Yes, the hype of having a fresh, new place to live in makes up the fun of moving. However, one cannot avoid the not-so-exciting part of it: packing.

Packing for a move may seem like a lot of tedious and time-consuming work, but you can easily trim down the effort and time with the help of these tips.

1. Start With One Room At A Time

Don’t start putting stuff in boxes just yet. In order to have easy unpacking later, you need to be organized with packing your things first. To begin with, start clustering the same things together in one room at a time. Group clothes together with clothes, books with books, and so on.

2. Get The Right Containers

After organizing your things, the next step would be picking the right boxes for them. There are boxes custom-made for certain items – like TVs for example – and movers will usually help you acquire those boxes. Avoid using flimsy boxes whose lids might open any time, or whose material might break when lifted.

3. Start Packing The Least Used Or Heaviest Items First

Once you’ve organized your things and have assigned them to their proper containers, you can start packing. But before you fill them up, make sure to tape the bottom of your boxes. Pack the least used items first and properly wrap any fragile items with bubble wrap or newspaper. When packing, store similar things together with the heaviest items at the bottom and the lightest ones on top. However, do not over-pack until the boxes get too heavy to carry.

4. Label Boxes Properly

Make sure to properly label each box – including markings it if contains anything fragile so that finding items later becomes easier. If you want to go the extra mile, list down all the items included in the box on top of one of the flaps, and even add another label saying where the box is supposed to go (“kitchen,” “master bedroom,” etc.) Likewise, create a master list of the things that you packed so you have an inventory just in case you forgot where you put it.

5. Put Your First Night Essentials In A Separate Box

Unpacking can take a lot of time – well beyond a day, in fact – and you wouldn’t want to spend your first night scrambling through all the boxes for items you need to use immediately. Pack the items you will use on your first night in a separate box and label accordingly. This includes your toiletries, clothes, bottled water, canned goods, snacks, blankets, pillows and sleeping mats.

Relocating to a new house need not be too much of a hassle. Packing your things in an organized and systematic way can help you enjoy the fun part of moving to a new place. It will definitely take time so make sure you have lots of patience. Packing is just the beginning – you have to unload those items and decorate your new home too.
